Jefferson County Education Coalition (L3)

A collaboration to move the conversation about learning, assessment, and accountability from the federal and state level to local communities.

Our Background

Last October, JCPS launched our Jefferson County Education Coalition. JCPS was one of the initial seven school districts working with the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) to design better local accountability approaches. We brought together families, community and business leaders, and local educators to build a better approach to partnership and accountability. Our coalition included people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.

Over the last few months, our coalition has identified a problem that we want to address and a possible solution. Now is the time to get feedback from our students about whether this is a meaningful problem worth solving and how we can best approach it. First, let us share a little more about how we got here.

Our Problem

Our community wants to recognize and nurture a broader set of student’s academic talents and life skills that we know are needed for success; however, the current accountability system presents a narrow view because it limits learning experiences and achievement leading to inequitable outcomes

Our Question

How might we cultivate relevant and authentic education experiences for/with students so that they demonstrate their talents and skills in ways that are valued and inspire the community?

Our Idea

Building on the foundation of the Backpack of Success Skills, we will co-create (with students, educators, parents, community) meaningful, impactful, and personalized opportunities for all students across grade levels to demonstrate life/success skills and show mastery of standards in flexible ways. We recognize that learning takes place both inside and outside of class and new and different ways so that all students can reach their full potential.
