ABOUT THE TEST
The writing exam is an essay students write online in response to a prompt.
It takes most students about 40-50 minutes to complete, but is not timed.
The essay is hand-graded by two, and sometimes three, certified scorers. The scoring and certification processes are described below:
The scoring of the writing exam is based on the College Readiness Writing Rubric. Scores range from 0 to 8, with 6 or more considered a passing score.
When students have completed the exam and submitted their essays, the KYOTE Writing Coordinator assigns them to certified scorers outside of the students’ high school in approximately equal numbers. Two scorers are assigned to each exam. If both scorers agree on a passing grade (6 or more) or failing grade (less than 6), then that agreed upon grade becomes the final grade; if not, then a third scorer (unaware that a tie is being broken) is asked to grade the exam and that grade becomes the final grade.
The scoring process takes about three weeks from the time an exam is submitted until a final grade is assigned, provided scorers complete their assignments in a timely manner. Please remain patient during this time.
Students will be notified once their scores are available.
KYOTE Writing- Sample Prompts
Prompt 1
Think of some people who are heroes or role models for others. What does our choice of heroes and role models—or lack of heroes and role models—reveal about our values and our society? Since different people in our society have different values, be sure to discuss more than one kind of hero or role model. Use reasons and/or examples from your own reading, experience, or observations to support your position.
Prompt 2
Sometimes we choose to do things that we do not really enjoy - jogging, studying, eating the right foods, and so on. Describe something you do by choice that you really do not enjoy. Explain why you continue to do it. Discuss the changes that might occur in your life if you were to stop this activity.
Prompt 3
Stories of people who run into financial trouble are quite common. Do high schools and colleges have a responsibility to require all students to take a personal management course? (Then the rest of the prompt tells them to write an essay with reasons and examples, etc. to support their position)
Prompt 4
New technologies can solve numerous problems, but they may also create new problems. The invention of the automobile, for example created the need for speed limits, driver's licenses, and traffic lights. Think of a new technology that has created problems. What are these problems? How were these problems addressed? Explain how well have they been addressed. Explain your position, with reasons and examples from your own experience, observations, or readings.
