How are students selected for admissions?

During the admissions season the Admissions Team at duPont Manual receives several inquiries regarding our review process. It is designed to consider all aspects of an applicant’s record and school experience thus far and is not intended to admit applicants solely on the basis of any single criterion (grades, test scores, attendance etc.).

Therefore, we have adopted a process that ensures an accurate, comprehensive, and unbiased review process, where each application is assessed by multiple evaluators within our school community before a decision is rendered.

Application evaluators have the opportunity and responsibility to consider all the information submitted in order to admit applicants who are both academically qualified and have demonstrated their potential to contribute to, and be successful students at, the duPont Manual High School.

AI: Artificial Intelgance

Students may use support, including AI tools, to organize ideas or check grammar during the application process. However, AI must not write the application content, essays, responses, or recommendations. All submitted work must authentically reflect the student's own voice and experiences.

I live outside Jefferson County. May I attend duPont Manual and YPAS?

No. duPont Manual and YPAS are apart of the Jefferson County Public School System. JCPS residency is required for admissions.

I don’t live in Jefferson County right now but will be moving there before school begins. Can I submit a magnet application for my student?

You may submit a magnet application in order for your student to be considered for your school choice option. Students may always attend a school within their zone. You must provide proof of residence in Jefferson County before your student can enroll in a JCPS school. Call the Office of School Choice at (502) 485-6250 for more information.

I am new to JCPS. How do I register and apply to schools?

All students new to JCPS must register with the district before applying for school. You may register your student for school regardless of immigration status and/or a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. For more information, contact the Office of Access and Opportunity at (502) 485-3650.

After you register, JCPS will verify your information and send you an email to complete your application, which can take up to two business days. Incoming ninth graders, high school students new to the district, or high school students with a new address may then enter a Magnet Application.

How to Apply: Families are encouraged to apply online, but in-person application options are available. You can apply in person at the following locations: • JCPS Office of School Choice: 4309 Bishop Lane • JCPS Office of Multilingual Learners (OML): 1325 Bluegrass Avenue • Any school location

Is transportation provided to Manual?

JCPS bus transportation services are not provided to all duPont Manual at this time. Only directly certified free and reduced lunch students are eligible for JCPS transportation to and from school.

Do public school students get priority over private school students when considering applications?

NO. All applications are scored using the same rubric. Each rubric is linked at the bottom of the Magnet Pages within this site.

If I am accepted into a magnet at Manual, may I take classes at YPAS?

Yes. Many students who are not YPAS majors enjoy participating in a variety of YPAS programs. However, some courses do require an audition for admission.

If I am undecided about choosing a magnet program in which to apply, what advice should I follow to narrow my choices?

Study each program carefully. Each program offers a demanding curriculum that students will find challenging and rewarding. Students should apply to the magnet area that best fits their interests and strengths. Sample course of study can be found: here.

If I enroll in a YPAS major or in the visual arts magnet, will I be prepared to go to college when I graduate?

Yes. Students in all magnets receive college preparatory courses of study.

Do students enrolled in one magnet area have opportunities to take elective courses from another magnet area?

Yes. Many students take elective course from another magnet major if they can work it into their schedule. Note: Some courses do have magnet only restrictions.

Exactly why does Manual utilize an alternate day block schedule that differs so much from most schools?

Manual's alternate day block schedule affords students the flexibility to take a variety of courses. This allows students to meet all college preparatory requirements as well as extensive coursework in their chosen magnet area. Manual's current schedule is and A/B block schedule with 90 minute blocks alternating every day for the whole year.

How do I apply to YPAS?

Although YPAS is technically a magnet component of Manual, YPAS has an additional audition process. If you wish to apply for YPAS you must indicate, on your JCPS application, that YPAS is your first choice. See YPAS Admissions Page for more information.

Do you accept students in grades 10th, 11th and 12th grade?

Yes. Upperclassmen may be accepted for admission based on space availability and magnet program requirements.

Can I select a duPont Manual or YPAS magnet as 1st and 2nd choice on my JCPS application?

Yes. You can select duPont Manual or YPAS as your 1st and 2nd choice. Please note 2nd choice applicants will not be notified unitll March 2025. 2nd choice applications will only be reviewed if seats are available after all 1st choice applications have been reviewed.

Do all students have the ability to take AP and Dual Credit classes?

Yes. All duPont Manual and YPAS students have the ability to enroll in Advanced College Coursework. Student must meet all College and University requirements and or prerequisites prior to enrollment.
