The mission of Coral Ridge Elementary is to provide a nurturing environment where all students will achieve success to their fullest potential.
During the 2007-08 school year, Coral Ridge was one of three schools chosen to implement the Elementary Redesign Initiative, which promotes innovative teaching methods and school design. The initiative redesigned our school in the following ways:
Smaller class sizes (20-to-1 student-teacher ratio)
Full-time instructional coach
Full-time school nurse
Differentiated instruction professional development (PD) for teachers
Laptops for students (Computer-Supported Intentional Learning Environment [CSILE])
Partnership with the University of Louisville (UofL) to host student teachers
CARE stands for "Creating A Respectful Environment." The program's focus is to build a connected community of learners. CARE for Kids embeds social and emotional learning strategies that can be incorporated throughout the day in all academic classes. Components of CARE include daily morning classroom meetings that set the tone for respectful learning and establish a climate of trust; end-of-the-day meetings in which students share something they have learned or enjoyed that day; regular class meetings that encourage students and teachers to reflect, solve problems, and make group decisions; cross-age buddies to support and interact with other students in the school to develop a whole school community; and developmental discipline that focuses on proactive intervention strategies and moving students toward self-control and responsibility.
Our literacy program encompasses a variety of research-based strategies to ensure all students become successful readers and writers. The Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) Five Block Literacy Program connects reading, writing, word work (phonemic awareness and phonics), community reading and conversation, and self-selected reading to the core content. Progress monitoring and analysis of student work enable teachers to provide individualized instruction that meets students' needs. The workshop model is used to allow students to progress and be supported at their level of instruction and readiness. Journeys supports the students in whole-class and small-group instruction. Teachers also use a wealth of books from the school book room. We currently have 9 primary teachers participating in the Bellarmine Literacy Project.
Engage NY Math uses hands-on activities to teach students concepts and problem-solving strategies. When solving problems, students are encouraged to use multiple representations, including manipulatives, pictures, and symbols to clarify concepts. Students work individually, with small groups, and with the whole class. Ten Minute Math/Class Routines allow students to explore concepts and develop skills. Ongoing formative assessment provides teachers to observe students' growth over time and make adjustments and accommodations.
Through the use of Full Option Science System (FOSS) science kits, students learn important scientific concepts and develop the ability to think critically by actively constructing ideas through their own inquiries and investigations. The research-based FOSS Program was created to engage students in these processes as they explore the natural world and master concepts in the life, earth, and physical sciences. www.fossweb.com
The Social Studies Alive Program integrates hands-on active learning and achieves a consistent pattern of high-quality social studies instruction while being mindful of standards. Integration of literacy, varied assessments, differentiated instruction, student engagement, and technology support are many of the strategies that enable our students to become critical thinkers while working in groups to problem-solve and master historical events and concepts.
Students extend academic learning through STEAM, humanities (art, music, dance, and drama), library, and physical education/practical living classes. They attend each special area five days a week, for 50 minutes, rotating the class each day.
Coral Ridge has an all day prekindergarten class for 3- and 4-year-old students. The Prekindergarten Program provides early literacy opportunities for students to help them develop readiness skills before entering kindergarten.
