History

Dedicated in 1954, Chenoweth Elementary School is named after Dr. John Henry Chenoweth, who was born on March 7, 1825, in Fisherville, Kentucky. He graduated from the University of Louisville (UofL) School of Medicine in 1844. Dr. Chenoweth went on to practice medicine in and around the St. Matthews area of Louisville for 48 years.

Some of his contemporaries called Dr. Chenoweth "the finest man who ever lived in this part of the country." He was an integral part of the St. Matthews community, and the fact that Chenoweth Elementary would be erected in his honor nearly 50 years after his death in 1905 is a testament to the kind of man our namesake was.
