Ballard High School first opened its doors to students in the fall of 1968. At this time Ballard did not have a class higher than ninth grade. Each year thereafter, Ballard added a grade and had its first graduating class in the spring of 1972.
Ballard's first year of competition was 1970-71. In this first year, the five starters were one junior- Ray Snider, two sophomores - Don Bostic and David Howard, and two freshmen - Don Jackson and Bob Lindsay. The first varsity team posted a 15-8 record against a schedule that was mostly senior players. Coach Richard Schmidt (1968-76), Don Salyer (1977-86), Scott Davenport (1986-96) and Jeff Morrow (1996-98) were instrumental in building the fine Ballard tradition. Coach Chris Renner further elevated this tradition of excellence leading the program from 1998-2022. Upon his retirement, Coach Renner left the program in the capable hands of one of his long-standing assistant coaches, Gregory Willis. We look forward to many successful seasons under his leadership.
In the 49 years of varsity competition, Ballard's varsity teams have never had a losing season. With 1295 wins and 352 losses, their winning percentage stands at 79%. Junior varsity tears have compiled a 704-185 record for a winning percentage of 79% as well. The program now stands at 1999-537 overall for a winning percentage of 78.8%
Ballard has produced 108 seniors that have received scholarships to play basketball from 49 graduating classes. Five former Ballard players have been drafted or have played in the National Basketball Association - Jerry Eaves, Jeff Lamp, Lee Raker, Allan Houston, Dejuan Wheat, and Kelan Martin
Ballard has won three state titles ('77, '88, '99), 17 regional championships and 39 district titles. They have been state runner up five times ('87, '03, '07, '10, &'13) and produced three Mr. Basketballs (Jeff Lamp-'77, Allan Houston-'89 & Quentin Snider-'14).
