Overview
Approximately 30-40% of food is wasted in America. Sadly, more than 41 million Americans face hunger, including nearly 13 million children. At the same time, wasting food wastes water, energy and wildlife habitat.
Across the USA schools serve more than 4 billion lunches per year, but students waste approximately 530,000 tons of food from them. If we could reduce food waste in schools nationwide by the 3%, it would be the equivalent of taking 12,400 passenger vehicles off the road for one year.
We want to empower you to start looking for solutions to this problem. By learning about the problem and looking at the food waste data in our own cafeteria, we can work together to figure out ways to stop food waste in our school. Are you ready to be a Food Waste Warrior?
