Dear Brown Elementary Families,
As we dive into the final month of the school year, there’s so much to look forward to! The learning, celebrations, and milestones are just around the corner, and we couldn’t be more excited. May is filled with a wonderful mix of end-of-year events, testing, and enjoyable activities. Take a peek at the important dates on the school calendar so you don't miss out on any of the fun!
Visiting Our Campus
When visiting our building for an event, please plan to:
Arrive early to find parking and navigate the sign-in process.
Bring a valid ID to receive your visitor's pass.
Allow time to go through weapons detection and find a seat.
Promotion Ceremonies
We are thrilled to invite families to celebrate our students' transitions to their next big chapters. Please join us in the auditorium for:
May 21, 9:00 AM | Kindergarten Promotion Ceremony
May 22. 8:30 AM | 5th Gr Promotion Ceremony
State Testing Reminders
We are busy with MAP Testing for Grades K-2 and state testing for grades 3–5 over the next two weeks. To help your student feel confident and prepared:
Charge Chromebooks every single night for grades 3-5.
Minimize absences to ensure students can test in a calm, familiar environment with their classmates and avoid make-up sessions.
This month’s Character Strong trait is Creativity. It’s a wonderful theme for the end of the year, inviting students to explore new ideas, reflect on their journeys, and celebrate their growth. We encourage everyone to let their imaginations soar and tackle new challenges in unique ways!
I truly appreciate all your amazing support. Let’s work together to make these final weeks of school not just strong, but meaningful, memorable, and full of creativity!
Sincerely,
Amy

Dear Families,
This week kicks off a busy assessment week for elementary. Our 3rd-5th graders will start KSA testing & K-2nd graders will take their MAP assessments. Please be sure to check in with your child's teacher if you have questions about which days they are testing. Family MAP Reports will be sent home by the last week of school.
We know that everyone is counting down to summer break at this point. Please take some time to make a family plan to help offset the "summer slide." Here are a few simple & fun ways that you can keep your child engaged throughout the summer:
Participate in the Louisville Free Public Library's Summer Reading Program. Read each day for 15-20 minutes.
Record your summer fun in a family (or individual) writing journal.
Take lots of screen-free breaks and enjoy a new hobby.
Complete the Lexia Bingo Sheets below & return them to me at next year's Meet & Greet to earn PBIS points for August.
Kindergarten 1st Grade 2nd Grade 3rd Grade 4th Grade 5th Grade
Your child's Lexia account will be accessible this summer. Students can log on through their JCPS accounts. Please remember that the "just right" time for Lexia is 15-20 minutes a day, 3-4 days a week.
Please reach out with any questions!
Kind Regards,
Lisa
⭐️ Reminder: Kindergarten students who do not meet grade-level expectations may benefit from an additional year in kindergarten. First-grade students who do not meet expectations will be required to repeat first grade. Decisions will be made by a school-based team that reviews multiple data points. If you have any questions about your child's progress, please do not hesitate to contact their classroom teacher. We are here to support you and your child's educational development.
Review Creativity as a family! Creativity is using your imagination to create something new or solve a problem. This challenge is about creating something new together! Find a large cardboard box and unleash your Creativity as you work together to create something totally new. What can the box become? Perhaps it will be a spaceship, an ice cream shop, a fairy castle, or a race car. Use any craft supplies or scraps on hand, along with your imagination, to turn an ordinary box into a new creation!
It's already May! Can you believe it? I just have a few reminders for this summer. The Brown School has an on-site food pantry that is available throughout the summer. Please reach out to me if you need anything. Also, the JCPS Clothing Assistance (CAP) Program will have a Clothing Blitz in July. Several times a year, families have the opportunity to shop for used clothing and household items for their students and families. Our CAP program is located at 1400 W. Jefferson St., 40203. You must be registered through the FRYSC Coordinator to attend. Registration will begin on July 6. If you need to contact me this summer, email me at tara.davis@jefferson.kyschools.us. I work throughout the summer, so don't hesitate to reach out. Enjoy the last month of school!
Please check the Bear Essentials and www.brownbearathletics.com for coaching contact, as well as other news and information about elementary athletics.
We are in the final days of Kindergarten - can you believe it?!? During May, we will be wrapping up our unit on enjoying trees in reading. We are working on reading CVCe words (silent e words) during our skills block. In math, we are in the final unit, which is a review of the year, gearing us up for the End of Course assessment. We are also finishing up our unit on plants and animals in science. And, of course, we are so excited for the promotion ceremony at 9:00 on Thursday, May 21, 2026.
Thank you for entrusting us with your kiddos this year, and we hope you have a great summer! Stop by and see us when you get to first grade!
Jenna & Cheri
As we are winding down for the end of the year students are excitedly completing the activities each day for the ABC countdown! We are also looking forward to our last field trip of the year to the Parklands on May 21st.
Here is what we will be working on for the last month of school:
Math: In our last math units of the year we will continue to use place value understanding and properties of operations to add within 100. Students will also measure length and count up to 120 length units. Additionally, students will reason with shapes and their attributes, partition shapes into equal pieces, and tell time to the hour and half hour.
ELA: In our last EL units students will explore comparing and contrasting the experiences and characters in stories. Students will also create opinion pieces where they will be exploring how to state claims and provide supporting details.
Eriauna & Lauren
Dear 2nd Grade Families,
We will be learning about the challenges facing bats and butterflies in Unit 2 of Module 4. Students will participate in a discussion of the unit's guiding questions: "What dangers do pollinators face?" and "Why should people protect pollinators?"
SuperStars are excited to share the readers' theater folktales (from Module 4, Unit 1) they have been working on in class with you. We will be performing them in the library reference room on Friday, May 8.
Ms. Susan’s Class -8:30-9:30 AM Ms. Mayra’s Class 9:30-10:30
Ms. Mayra & Ms. Susan
Wednesday, May 13: Louisville Bats Game
Departure: 10:10 AM
Action Needed: CHANGE IN DUE DATE. Permission slip is due for this field trip on Tuesday, 5/5 (5/9 was previously stated, but we need the final headcount by tomorrow so the Bats organization can process our tickets). Please send in money for both you and your student (if you are a chaperone).
Literacy: Module 4: Water Around The World | This module focuses on the importance of clean freshwater around the world. In Unit 2, students continue their study of the three issues related to water, this time reading different texts about each issue and comparing the authors' points of view with their own. In Unit 3, students plan and create a video public service announcement to educate people about their chosen water issue and to encourage them to take action with specific recommendations to solve the problem.
Math: Unit 7: Two-dimensional Shapes and Perimeter | In this unit, students reason about attributes of two-dimensional shapes and learn about perimeter. Students learn to describe, compare, and sort two-dimensional shapes in earlier grades. In this unit, students continue to develop increasingly precise language to describe and categorize shapes. Students learn to classify broader categories of shapes (quadrilaterals and triangles) into more specific subcategories based on their attributes.
Andrew and Samantha
Fourth graders will finish off the year creating a Public Service Announcement for a cause that is important to them. In Math, we will enrich our learning by completing design projects to review fourth-grade content. In Science, we will complete our unit on Energy & Electromagnetism, focusing on how energy relates to motion and how it can be used to solve a problem.

⭐ Art | Christi George, K-6 Visual Art & High School Ceramics, christi.george@jefferson.kyschools.us
Christie’s 4th graders are currently in their 6-week art rotation. We are finishing-up our clay pinch pot people. These will dry, get fired in the kiln, and then we’ll paint. We’re also discussing drawing techniques that show depth in 2D artworks, and are currently drawing a collection of cacti in a pot that is decorated with Southwest Native American symbols. We will also complete a cardboard mask inspired by contemporary artist, Kimmy Cantrell.
Kindergarten students continue to develop their fine motor skills in art. This rotation, we finished some older pieces so they could go home. In the last week of school, we will continue working on our spring flower garden mixed media projects.
First graders will be creating Van Gogh inspired sunflower gardens to fill our halls with sunshine.
2nd graders are learning about sea turtles and creating scenes showing their habitats. These will be painted and fabulous! Mayra’s class will also be painting their pinch pot bears that we made out of clay. Susan’s class has already done this and taken them home 🙂
