Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is an important aspect of education and human development. SEL is a process which allows for young people to develop identity, manage emotions, achieve goals, feel and show empathy for others, maintain relationships, and make responsible decisions.
Social emotional learning aims to teach students five core competencies using partnerships between communities, families & caregivers, schools, and classrooms. These partnerships are enhanced through aligned learning opportunities, authentic partnerships, school wide culture, practice & climate, and through SEL instruction.
Social Emotional Learning aims to teach students five core competencies these include self awareness, self management, responsible decisions making, relationship skills, and social awareness.
Leawood Elementary utilizes the social emotional curriculum of Second Step to provide students with the most up to date and research based social emotional learning. Second Step is a social emotional learning curriculum which uses five units to teach SEL competencies. Each unit and is tailored to students developmental needs and ages.
