Photography

We are very excited to kick off our brand new STEAM Club with a Photography project where we explored the Science and Art of writing with light. The younger students worked with Mrs. McDowell to make silhouette prints on Solar Paper, while the older students worked with Mrs. Fergason to take photographs with their own pinhole cameras. This was a very fun experience for everyone to make their own compositions and see them come to life as they developed.

SOLAR PAPER

A beautiful composition. Covered areas are not exposed to sunlight and create a silhouette image

Students create sketches of how they laid out the objects on their solar paper

Setting out their clipboards in the sunlight to begin the exposure

The paper is exposed until it turns white, then they are rinsed in water to stop the chemical reaction.

Our collection of pictures are laid out to dry fully and deepen their colors.

The chain and gears created a very cool silhouette

It's interesting to see how the early morning shadows stand out. Can you tell how the sun was angled based on this print?

A fun, spooky compilation

PINHOLE CAMERAS

STEAMers listen to Mrs. Fergason explain the science behind pinhole cameras

All cameras create negative prints because of how the sunlight activates the chemicals on the paper or film. We took these and scanned them in a computer to flip black/white so it appears as a positive photo, shown below.

After processing the photo paper in the dark room the negative prints are hung up to dry.

Happy STEAMers take a cool portrait with their homemade pinhole cameras.

Students pose under the new shade structure in our outdoor classroom. The intense light/shade makes for great contrast in the picture.

Here's a lovely early morning shot of Red Rocks and Mount Morrison. Do you notice how this is a mirror image?

What a cool #sunselfie !
