What is Social Emotional Learning?

The Collaborative for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL) describes social emotional learning as “the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions” (www.casel.org, 2017).

The social emotional competency areas include:

Self Awareness

Self Management

Social Awareness

Relationship Skills

Responsible Decision Making

At Foothills Elementary we are working hard to teach social and emotional skills to all of our students. At Foothills we use SecondStep as our SEL curriculum. SecondStep is an evidence-based curriculum that teaches skills for social and academic success. There is significant research to show that it teaches kids SEL skills. Each grade, K-5, have a curriculum that is developmentally appropriate for the age group. Below is a link to SecondStep's site and detailed lesson objectives so that you know what your child is working on for SEL.
