Sierra 5th Grade

Fifth grade writing tasks build on the units taught during reading block. Students will craft writing pieces from an author's point of view using the skills they know as a reader. Here are the writing units and correlations to reading:

Students use their knowledge of author's craft, perspective and them to write their own short stories or craft their own version (change the ending, change the point of view, etc.) of a story written by another author without abandoning important plot points.

Students use their skills for reading non-fiction texts to craft their own informational pieces. They will write about something they know well and do not need to research so they focus on the structure of their text (essay format). Students will focus on their structure, organization, vocabulary and mindful use of text features during this unit.

Students will acquire researching skills and use them to craft their own argumentative pieces. They will research a debatable issue of their choice and craft a final product presenting their claim, reasons and supporting evidence.

Students will participate in multiple, multi-paragraph writing pieces responding to readings throughout each unit. This work will be done during reading, writing and Boost.

Students will first study poetry to identify craft and theme. Then, they will craft their own poetry to communicate a universal theme to their audience.
