My name is Sadie O'Keefe, I am a senior in high school at Evergreen High School. I am an outgoing and passionate person who loves to be with friends and being in a social setting. I live in Evergreen with my parents, my little sister, two dogs, and two cats. I love to play soccer, and I have played soccer since I was 5 years old. Additionally, I love going to concerts, hanging out with friends, going to concerts, and really doing anything outside, including hiking, skiing, and camping!
The overall goal of my Capstone Project is to figure out what it truthfully means to be a physical therapist. This will start with acquiring a mentor. I have found one, Maya Gonzales, a sports medicine chiropractor. After finding a mentor I will start to shadow therapy appointments, gaining the knowledge of how these appointments work and what they look like. Additionally I will need to also find out how scheduling works, how these doctors schedule their appointments with patients and what gets priority over other things, even if there are any priority patients. Next I would learn the process of a diagnosis, and how the doctor would procede, and how the prognosis of each patient differs based on the type, stage, and severity of the injury they present. Learning the basics of the human body, and how things should look versus how they are presented is something that I will have to learn, and shadowing the sports medicine chiropractor will give me a better understanding of this. Overall, I would like to learn about how physical therapists work, the way that they know how to diagnose patients, and what types of treatment they use to help bring the patient back from extensive injury.
I have had many physical therapists and sports medicine physicians throughout my life due to my athletic nature, I have experienced many knee and ankle injuries throughout my soccer career and have therefore seen many doctors who are in this field. One stuck out to me; she was kind, caring, and passionate about helping me get back to the sport that I love. Her name was Brooke Bemis, unfortunately she moved away last summer. I am inspired by the connection she had with me, and I aspire to become a physical therapist and connect with my patients the way she did with me. However, now I have found another physician to be my mentor, her name is Maya Gonzales. She doubles as a physical therapist and a sports medicine chiropractor, and has an office in Evergreen filled with other people who specialize in the same field. I am fascinated by this field, and want to help people who have gone through injuries similar to how I have, and help them get back to doing what they love to do. I love the human body and the anatomy that comes with it. I ultimately want to learn how to care for patients, create strong trusting bonds, and learn to properly diagnose patients and create the correct prognosis to heal these patients, seeing them off to success prior to their injuries.
