Teaching is my passion and I couldn't think of a better profession! I am going on my 19th year of teaching with experience in kindergarten, first, and second grade. I completed my master's degree in curriculum instruction and thrive on being a life long learner. I have taught in Jefferson County for 15 years and 4 years in the Boston area, where my children were born.

I have been married for 14 years to my husband, Scott. We have two children, Noah (9) and Addie (11). I feel very fortunate to be teaching first grade while my own children are in elementary as well. I understand the same feelings, excitements, concerns, worries, and joys of your child's experience in the first years of school.

When I'm not teaching, I enjoy hiking, running, skiing, snowshoeing, and overall being with my family and being outdoors. I also love to camp and I recently took to road biking. Someday I will get back into rock/ice climbing when my children are a bit older.

In the classroom I believe in being Firm, Fair, and Fun! I also believe that all children are capable of learning and have a right to learn in a safe, positive and nurturing environment. I feel that partnership with teacher/parent is crucial in order for each child's success in the his/her educational career.

I look forward to an amazing year teaching your child!

Colleen Welch

My name is Colleen Welch. This is my 26th year of teaching, 25 of those years have been in 1st grade. I have been teaching at Ryan Elementary since 1998.

I absolutely LOVE 1st grade!

I grew up in Arvada and went to Jefferson County schools from Kindergarten through 12th grade. I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Human Development with a concentration in Child Development. I also have a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

My family includes my husband and 2 teenage daughters. My oldest is at CU Boulder and my youngest is in high school. When I am not at school, I am likely watching my kids play sports or hanging out with my family.

My favorite things include mexican food, reading, watching movies, and just hanging out with my family.

Shawn Tateyama

This is my thirteenth year teaching, all of which have been here at Ryan. My first two years at this school I taught fourth grade and I was lucky enough to be able to move to first grade eleven years ago. I have my Masters in Literacy (Reading and Writing) from the University of Colorado, Denver as well as an Endorsement in Gifted and Talented and the Jefferson County District Certification for teaching English as a Second Language.

I have been married to my husband Troy for 16 years and have two children, Preston (12) and Peyton (10). I love spending time with my extended family when I'm not teaching, and I am lucky enough to have most of them nearby. I also enjoy watching a variety of sports and try to go to as many Broncos, Rockies and CU Buffs football and basketball games as I possibly can.

I feel privileged to be able to say that I love coming to work every day and spending time with some very entertaining and inspiring young people!
