This story is all about the battle between honoring cultural heritage and trying to fit in with modern society.  The main character Maya Aziz is a seventeen year old muslim student who wants to be a regular high school student  but finds herself struggling against the strict and confining, cultural expectations of her parents.  The conflict increases after her family becomes the victim of a hate crime.  Ultimately, Maya must learn to navigate her situation and find a way to balance her two worlds.

Muchacho

Muchacho is an outstanding story of a young man trying to become something more than what society expects.  He is a juvenile delinquent who is more likely to choose trouble over placidity.  He sees school as meaningless confinement until he meets a teacher who challenges his perceptions and a beautiful, young girl who inspires him to rise above his circumstances.  This inspiring story contains some adult language and subject matter, but is worth the read. The story is truly thought-provoking and uplifting..

Far From the Tree

This is the story of three teenage siblings who were each adopted into separate families.  Grace, the middle child, finds herself pregnant in high school, faced with putting her own child up for adoption.  As she tries to come to terms with her new situation, she discovers her other siblings.  The three of them set out on a quest to discover who they are and their place in the world.

Our Chemical Hearts

Henry Page is a put-together high school senior who just earned the honor of being the editor-in-chief of the high school newspaper.  He is invigorated about the prospect of leaving his mark; however, things begin to unravel when he finds himself drawn to the new girl Grace Town.  She is nothing like he has ever met.  She walks with a cane and wears oversized boys’ clothing.  As their story unfolds, the reader learns about the incredible pain of loss and the power of forgiveness and redemption.
