Luge was invented in Switzerland in the 16th century. The word "luge" is French for sled. The first tracks were built by Swiss hotels as a tourist attraction.The first official race was held in Davos in 1883. In 1964 the sport joined the Olympics. Luge is one of the oldest winter Olympic sports.Luge remains a very dangerous sport, due to high speeds and little to no protection for the athlete
