Mt. Wilson is part of three fourteener's just southwest of Telluride, Colorado. The other two giants near Mt. Wilson are "El Diente" and Wilson Peak. Mt. Wilson, and Wilson Peak are named for the chief topographer A.D. Wilson.  Mt. Wilson is Colorado’s 16th highest peak at 14,246ft (4,343m). It is the second highest peak in the San Juan Mountains only to be surpassed by Uncompaghre Peak. Mining existed everywhere around Mt. Wilson and Telluride from the late 1850s up until the early 1900s.
