Class Syllabus & Expectations

Supplies Needed:

Students should come to class every day with their IM student workbook, charged chrome book, supply case with pencils, colored pencils, markers, expo markers and headphones.

Homework Policy:

With the change in school start times and the elimination of after school tutoring and help, all math work is intended to be completed during class or during Advisement time on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Please reach out with any questions or concerns. Homework may be given occasionally. Typically students will be given time to work on assigned problems at the end of class. If additional time is needed outside of class it should not require more than 15 - 20 minutes per night. If you find that your student is surpassing this time working - please cut them off and let your teacher know. Additionally, Khan topics will be assigned and worked on during class-time. If additional time is needed, these topics may need to be completed for homework during class or Advisement.

7th (MYP 2) Mathematics Curriculum:

Illustrative Mathematics

Summit Ridge is piloting our 4th year in a new math curriculum called Illustrative Mathematics. Resources from this program will be used in class to drive instruction.

Students are expected to be up and working collaboratively in groups and occasionally vertically at whiteboards. Students will be presented with a problem and released to work with their groups to brainstorm ideas on how that problem might be solved. This allows students to pull information from their prior knowledge and make connections to the big idea of the lesson instead of just passively memorizing the steps of how to solve. Additionally, classmates often have varied ideas (valid and not-valid) that assist in pushing student-thinking forward.

Khan Academy

Students will independently and collaboratively practice the skills we've learned with problems from Khan Academy each week. These will be skills directly related to the big ideas we've been working on and should be accessible. Occasionally prerequisite skills or additional practice skills will be assigned for topics for the week.

Time will be provided weekly to work on Khan Topics during class. If your student is struggling with these skills...additional help might be needed during Advisement time on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays.

The Old Way of Teaching Math:

Teacher tells.
Students listen.
Students practice.
Teacher corrects.

The New Way of Teaching Math:

Teacher ensures students understand the question.
Students work individually - Teacher monitors, listens and asks questions.
Teacher helps students synthesize their learning.
Students work in groups - Teacher monitors, listens and asks questions to understand students' thinking.
