Introduction to Geography
Unit One
On the move: Population, Settlement, and Movement
This unit introduces the fundamentals of geography with emphasis on the student’s world, use of geographic tools, physical and human geography and the purpose of thinking spatially. In addition, students will learn about the distribution of human population and challenges facing a world of seven billion people. The course expands to a world focus with continued map work and study of world issues such as the interplay of economics and politics in shaping quality of life. Students will become familiar with the United Nations’ Human Development Index and investigate factors which influence quality of life.
Assessment—Population Document-Based Essay Question: As the world’s population exceeds 7 billion people, it brings new questions to its inhabitants about population pressures and sustainability. Use your background knowledge and the documents below to hypothesize about future global population growth. In the year 2050, how will population growth impact the planet?
Unit Two
Who is in Control? Human-Environment Interactions
Students will examine how the Colorado River impacts economics, society, politics and the environment in the Southwestern United States. Students will emphasis problem-solving skills using the Colorado River as a case study.
Assessment—Colorado River Water Forum: Demonstrate knowledge of Economic, Social, Political (and/or) eNvironmental (ESPeN) issues in the Colorado River Basin by exploring varying perspectives.
Unit Three
Global Issues and Solutions
The international connectedness of our world dictates an understanding of how, where and why political and economic cooperation and conflict exists today. Students will analyze specific case studies to better understand current global issues.
Assessment—United Nations Discussion: You will be a part of the Model UN Security Council.
Final Project—The World According to Sesame Street
