Entrance Procedure - Have everything you need. No food or candy allowed in the classroom. Leave hallway behavior in the hallway.
How to enter the classroom - (Come in, Sit down, Get to work)
1) Walk quietly into the classroom
2) Gently place nonessential items away from view.
3) Get necessary materials; view the assignment.
4) Silently sit in your chair and begin reading.
It is important for students to understand and apply this first procedure in order to minimize disruptions at the beginning of class and to maximize learning time as well as time-on-task.
How to find the day’s Learning Goal(s) - All daily goals, assignments, and objectives are posted at the front of the classroom and/or on the calendar.
When you are tardy - Follow normal classroom procedures for entering the classroom except greet the teacher on your way to your seat. If you have a tardy slip, ensure the teacher receives it promptly. This procedure minimizes classroom distraction when a student enters the room tardy.
If you just arrived that day, mark yourself present on the restroom computer.
When you are absent - The returning day, follow normal classroom procedures for entering the classroom. Please contact Mr. O’Keefe during non-class or non-productive time to obtain your missed assignments (all lessons and assignments are in your workbook, on the class website ,or Google Classroom).
When the teacher is absent - Nothing changes. Please respect the substitute teacher.
What the teacher does when he wants the class's attention - I will ask for it, or say “I’ll wait”.
How to respond to the teacher's request for your attention - Stop what you are doing, turn and face the teacher, pay attention with a zero voice level, and be ready for instruction.
When someone knocks at the door or enters the room - Continue working as if nothing happened; ignore it. The student seated closest to the door can get Mr. O’Keefe’s attention.
When visitors are in the classroom - Continue working as if nothing happened, ignore them unless told otherwise by your teacher.
If the phone should ring during class - Continue working as if nothing happened; ignore it unless directed otherwise.
You can answer the phone if Mr. O’Keefe is not in the room. Please take a message or have another student find Mr. O’Keefe.
Cell Phone Protocol - Summit Ridge Middle School will require all students to turn their cell phones off and put them away during school hours. The same goes for wireless headphones and smart watches that are being used as communication devices or toys.
Working cooperatively in pairs or teams - Use courtesy at all times. If you know there may be an issue with another student, please let Mr. O'Keefe know before it becomes and issue for the class.
Participating in class discussions (not lecture) - Utilize courtesy. Listen intently and ask appropriate questions- show empathy. Look and listen to the speaker. Only one person at a time is allowed to talk during discussion.
An emergency alert- Remain quiet and seated. Wait for the teacher's instructions.
How to turn in assignments- Most of your work with be in the Workbook or on paper. It will be checked in class, or collected at the end of class. You will be instructed on what do do for each assignment.
When you need extra help or a conference- We can coordinate a time during advisement.
How to indicate you understand- Restate the issue in your own words. e.g. Q: “Do you understand?” A: “I understand that I should restate what I understand when answering that question.” I might ask you to teach me the skill or process.
What to do when you finish your work early- Read your book.
What to do when you finish your work late- Email teacher.
What to do when you have a question or need help with class work- Remain seated, raise your hand, remain silent, and wait for acknowledgement. Attempt to solve it on your own (or ask 3 before me) during your wait time after teacher acknowledgement.
What to do when you need to leave the classroom for a restroom break- Raise your hand holding up two crossed fingers and wait for acknowledgement. Abuse of this procedure shall result in revocation of this privilege. No restroom/water breaks are allowed during lectures or any time deemed as productive by the teacher. DO NOT ASK TO LEAVE IN THE FIRST FIVE OR LAST FIVE MINUTES OF CLASS.
What if I need to leave my seat? Remain seated, raise your hand, remain silent, and wait for acknowledgement. It is distracting to others when people randomly move around the room.
What to do when you need to see the Health Aide: Remain seated, raise your hand, remain silent, and wait for acknowledgement. I will call down to make sure you can go.
What to do to prepare for dismissal- Begin putting away your materials WHEN YOU ARE INSTRUCTED TO DO SO.
Step 1: Fall silent.
Step 2: Wait for the teacher to dismiss you by exit questioning or other means. Ensure your area is clean and free of trash or classroom materials and that your desk is in proper alignment.
Step 3: The teacher dismisses the students. Wait for a signal from the teacher that you may leave.
How to ask for things- Say the person’s name, say “may I” and “ please”, and thank the person. If the person says no, use professional problem solving techniques.
How to listen - Look at the speaker and set work aside. Since you are seated in a classroom, concentrate on what is being said and not on what you want to say. Write that down so you don't forget
