Please be sure to take a look at the Family Culture homework (sent home Friday November 3). Please assist your child in completing this by November 17. We hope you enjoy connecting with your students about what makes your family special and unique. Thank you!
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
ECO Adventures is a program that visits schools to teach about specific social studies and science topics. We are excited get to have this program visit fourth grade twice this year- on Nov. 10th and in the spring. On Nov. 10th, we will be participating in their program focused on learning about Ancestral Puebloans. Students do not need to turn in permission slips for this activity. The cost for both of the program visits combined will be $9.00. You can make the payment online, or turn in cash/check to your child's homeroom teacher.
Our next field trip will be Friday, November 17th. We will visit Roxborough State Park. Students will be able to learn even more and make connections to our Colorado history learning and our Earth Systems science learning.
Permission slips will be sent out Nov. 3rd.
The cost is $5.00, only the cost of the bus.
We need 4-5 parent volunteers from each class. If you would like to volunteer, please email your child's homeroom teacher. If you have already volunteered for a field trip, please let us know if you are interested, but know that we will first give other parents the opportunity. If we do not have enough volunteers we will let you know as soon as possible. Thank you!
We will leave Maple Grove at 9:30 am and return by 2:00 pm. Students will need to bring a sack lunch, clothes appropriate for the weather, and good walking shoes.
An email with more specific information will be sent closer to the date.
Literacy
SPELLING
Spelling Lists for the Entire Year LINK
Ways to Practice Spelling Words LINK
Students receive a new spelling word list for every new week in each literacy module (there are three weeks in each module). Each spelling list follows a specific spelling pattern and students are expected to spend time at home practicing their spelling words. The "Ways to Practice Spelling Words" are simply suggestions, but students can practice the in any way that works best for them. Students will occasionally have a different spelling assignment to work on and might be asked to complete different kinds of spelling homework, such as spelling sorts based on patterns.
Math
In this unit, students deepen their understanding of how fractions can be composed and decomposed, and learn about operations on fractions.
In grade 3, students partitioned a whole into equal parts and identified one of the parts as a unit fraction. They learned that non-unit fractions and whole numbers are composed of unit fractions. They used visual fraction models, including tape diagrams and number lines, to represent and compare fractions. In a previous unit, students extended that work and reasoned about fraction equivalence.
Here, students multiply fractions by whole numbers, add and subtract fractions with the same denominator, and add tenths and hundredths. They rely on familiar concepts and representations to do so. For instance, students had represented multiplication on a tape diagram, with equal-size groups and a whole number in each group.
In earlier grades, students used number lines to represent addition and subtraction of whole numbers. Here, they use number lines to represent the decomposition of fractions into sums, and to reason about addition and subtraction of fractions with the same denominator, including mixed numbers.
Students then apply these skills in the context of measurement and data. They analyze line plots showing fractional lengths and find sums and differences to answer questions about the data.
Lastly, students use fraction equivalence to find sums of tenths and hundredths.
HISTORY
UNIT 1- Before the Borders of Colorado (continuing through November)
In this unit, we learn what Colorado was like before it was Colorado the state. We spend time learning about the different land regions of the area that is now within our state boundaries. We also spend time learning about the first peoples of Colorado- Ancient Native Americans. Students take time to research, discuss, answer questions, and share their learning about the different Ancient Native American groups of Colorado.
We are excited to connect our work to our in-school field trip with Eco Adventures to learn even more about the Ancestral Puebloans!
Social emotional learning
At Maple Grove we use a program called Second Step to move through Social Emotional Learning units and lessons. We are excited to work with Ms. Pullen every other week for our Second Step lessons! The work we do with Ms. Pullen is connected to our morning meetings, group work, and more.
The topic of unit two is Emotions Management. Students learn to that recognizing and identifying their own emotions helps them better manage their emotions and identify how others might be feeling. Teaching emotions management can lead to improved attention, motivation and academmic performance.
science
We are continuing our second science unit, Earth's Systems- Processes that Shape the Earth, which will take us through November. Students will learn about how the Earth changes over time in different ways- creating the features we see today and exposing rocks by different processes. We are excited to connect specific topics in this unit such as weathering and erosion to our learning at our field trip to Roxborough State Park.
