The mariner's astrolabe was an important tool to measure the sun or a star above the horizon. Hipparchus was an ancient astronomer who invented the mariner’s the astrolabe. His writings were called Planisphaerium. The astrolabe helped tell when Islam's prayer time was and helped tell the direction to Islam’s holiest city, Mecca. The astrolabe was introduced to Europe from Spain in the early 12th century. It was most popular in the 15th and 16th centuries.
