A Little Help's Service Saturday:
An awesome service opportunity where groups (from schools, families, faith-based orgs, etc.) can bond over serving our older adults by helping them get their yards prepared for winter. A Little Help is a grassroots organization founded in 2005 by neighbors in the Washington Park Neighborhood of Denver who realized that our older adults often need just a bit of help to maintain their homes and yards. We are completely volunteer based. Our volunteers serve their older adult neighbors through yard work, transportation, and friendly visits, among several other things. In the 17 years since our founding, we have expanded throughout the Metro Denver area, into Jefferson County, Northern Colorado (Fort Collins, Berthoud, and Loveland), and to the Western Slope (Grand Junction and the Roaring Fork Valley). We are proud to serve around 1600 older adult members across the state through our 3000 volunteers across our three distinct areas.
The way registration works is a team leader will go in and register all the participants with their name and email and then can start selecting the home or homes they will be going to off of the Service Saturday Map. Here is the link to register with more detailed instructions: https://www.alittlehelp.org/civicrm/event/info?id=2060&reset=1. Teams are typically 4-6 so if your group is bringing 8-12 people, I would recommend splitting them into two different groups with two different team leaders. Please reach out to walker@alittlehelp.org if you have any questions or would like to learn more about A Little Help.

Teen Court: See the brochure here
The volunteer program is meant for non-justice involved teens to take part in a court setting hearing where they get to interact with a teen defendant and recommend terms and conditions. Of course some terms and conditions will be limited, however, this is also a great way for the defendant to have a different view on how terms and conditions of their supervision are determined. If it comes from their peers it may have a different impact rather than it coming from us professionals.
The volunteers will have the opportunity to serve as jury members, bailiffs , and prosecutors. We will have a judge/prosecutor serve as the teen court judge and will be part of our trainings as well to help the volunteers have a better understanding of the court system. The hearings are held every other Tuesday, for this semester will be virtual. We are also going to have community members present before each hearing and either use the time to teach a life skill or provide educational information about a service or community member. The age requirements are 13-17, no system involvement as I stated above, and this will also count as community service for them if they need it.
Overall this program is a restorative justice method for the youth that come through our court system. Contact: Jose Lopez-Nava/Teen Court Coordinator/joslop@lakewoodco.org/303.987.7413
