Homework Policy

Planner Procedure - The planner goes home every night. It is the student's responsibility to engage his/her parents at an appropriate time to talk about the day and ask for a signature when finished explaining the day's lessons and new learning. This is a process that will likely take 5-10 minutes each day.

This is important for 3 reasons:

1. to communicate what we are doing in class

2. to work on responsibility

3. to allow the students time to review the day's learning

Spelling - Students practice spelling words 5 min/day for 5 days or 25 minutes each week. A spelling list will go home in the Friday Folder for a test every other Friday.

Reading - Students read 20 min/day for 5 days or 100 minutes each week.

Math Fact Fluency - Students practice math facts for 5 min/day for 5 days or 25 minutes each week. Please help ensure these minutes are spread across multiple days instead of lumping it into one day as mastery is better achieved through repeated practice. Fact fluency problems are quick single digit by single digit (or double digits up to 20 minus single digits for subtraction) problems that when mastered are answered within 3 seconds each. I recommend starting with addition, followed by subtraction, then multiplication, and finally division. The expectation is mastery of addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts by the end of 3rd grade. Division facts are expected to be mastered by the end of 4th grade. Flash cards are a great tool as they allow each student to customize the facts they are working with so that only the combinations they need to master are in the practice. There are some great online games and apps to keep the practice engaging, too.

*Additional - Students are given class time to complete classwork. If they do not finish their classwork, it may become homework. Occasionally, additional homework will be assigned as needed.
