GT Online Student Academy

In collaboration with Jeffco Gifted & Talented, Jeffco Virtual Academy offers full-year core courses for 6th, 7th and 8th grade that are developed and taught by certified GT teachers. These GT courses enrich the standard curriculum, move at a faster pace, ask students to think deeply and creatively, and address social emotional needs. 

• History/Rationale/Philosophy:  80% of students in Jeffco who are on ALPs are not enrolled in a GT Center program.  These online GT classes were design specifically with this group of students in mind.  We wanted to be able to provide direct access to the increased rigor and social-emotional support offered in a GT class, along with the opportunity for students to work with a GT Certified Teacher and interact with other GT students across the district.

• Eligibility:  Any* students with or eligible for an Advanced Learning Plan (ALP) can enroll in one or more courses.  *Students currently enrolled in a GT Center program are  generally not eligible, except in special circumstances and for the purposes of acceleration.  With the exception of Math, acceleration in other subjects may be considered, but is not standard practice.  All courses are designed and assessed using grade-level standards.  Please contact individual course instructors with questions regarding acceleration and/or reference this guidance document.

• Logistics: Courses are to be taken in place of live courses in neighborhood schools or at home in order to enrich the curriculum of students in particular areas of strength.

• Part & Full Time:  Full-time online students may take core GT courses and regular JVA electives.  Part time students may take up to 3 GT courses through JVA and will still remain a full time student at their neighborhood school (additional courses and electives taken through neighborhood school)

• Structure:  It is important to note that due to the smaller class sizes in this program, our GT teachers are "adjuncts" who typically have other positions in Jeffco in addition to teaching these classes.  Students in the classes themselves are a mix of both full time and part time JVA students.  P/T JVA students are enrolled at their home schools and are taking 1-3 of these classes online in place of the options at their home school.   F/T students take all of their core classes and electives with JVA.  The factors listed above contribute to the following limitations:

1. "Whole class" meetings will not be available due to the wide variation in student and teacher schedules.

2. GT teachers will not be available to attend the Wednesday in-person sessions for F/T JVA students held on the Irwin campus.

     IMPORTANT - Our GT teachers regularly schedule 1-on-1 virtual meetings with students to answer questions and provide content support.  These meetings meet the needs of the unique schedules of both students and teachers, and are set up at the request of either party.
