NHS is a program to help shape students into well-rounded and active members of the community. It helps the boost community spirit and relationships, gets students involved within their community, and maintains Golden’s impression on others.
Maintain an unweighted GPA of 3.85+ and at the end of your sophomore year you will receive a letter that welcomes you to apply to NHS. Please note it doesn't grant you a membership until after you apply.
Once you apply, the faculty council will review each application based on your written application and how you exhibit the four pillars of NHS (Scholarship, Character, Leadership, and Service)
Additional information about qualification and application can be found in our Chapter Bylaws.
10-hour chapter project
Welchester & Shelton Elementary School Outreach, Demon tutoring, Golden Backpack Program, Golden Tutor Program, Recycling Committee, Manning Middle School Outreach tutoring, Bell Middle School Outreach tutoring or Personal Passion Projects.
4-hour personal project
Students are highly encouraged to go out on their own and find something they are passionate about to get involved in. Although we do send out multiple opportunities for them to get involved through our local community, we ask that they take the initiative to find their own volunteer project. (While these hours do not have to be pre-approved, they cannot come from any sport/club/activity/etc required volunteer hours. Ex. If you are asked to volunteer for a sport event, you CANNOT write those hours on your volunteer log - they do no count for NHS!)
Two recycling shifts
Twice a semester, students are required to sign up for two recycling shifts. They will spend about twenty-thirty minutes helping gather all the recycling in the school as part of our initiative to help the environment.
Volunteer Logs - Must be signed & have correct contact information for all volunteer coordinators
At the end of each semester students are required to hand in, a printed out volunteer log completed with one reflect on the projects they completed that semester. This shows us proof that they did complete all their hours, gives us feedback regarding the structure and organization of NHS, and most importantly how we can build a better program.
