D'Evelyn Forensics
(Competitive Speech and Debate)
(Competitive Speech and Debate)
After 29 years of teaching, I retired in May 2020. But I had been coaching Speech and Debate since 1985. I needed to find a new home for my passion and D'Evelyn seemed like a great fit. I have been honored by both the Colorado High School Activities Association and the National Speech and Debate Association. On a more personal note, I am married and have two adult children: Ryan and Lisa. Lisa is married to Brad. My nephew Ty also lives with us. We have a cat and a dog. I write in my spare time and have had a few pieces published.
At its root, "forensics" is that which helps us "get to the truth." Forensic sciences examine fingerprints and other evidence to find the truth of a crime. Forensic pathology examines how a disease spreads to find the truth behind an epidemic. Forensic accountants examine ledger books and taxes to find the truth behind such records (this is how Al Capone was caught.)
Forensic speaking is speaking that helps us get to the truth. Debate events are organized similar to a court trial where two sides are presented to ultimately help a jury find the truth. Public Speaking Events enable the students to research issues and discuss the truths they find. Interpretation events give students the chance to express the truths of the human condition.
