Curriculum Information

READING:

At Westridge Elementary, our reading program consists of Lucy Calkins Reading Units of Study as well as the Houghton Miffilin reading series, and other authentic literature, leveled to meet student needs. We use a guided reading approach for instruction as well as a reading workshop model. During guided reading, students are grouped into flexible groups according to their reading ability or acquired strategies.


SPELLING:

First graders will use inventive spelling to spell words and are taught to spell sight words correctly. They can identify first, middle, and last sounds by the letter or letters associated with them and use long vowels in words.


MATH:

Our math program follows Jeffco's content standards and aligns to common core standards. The resource we are using is Math Expressions by Houghton Mifflin. In first grade the emphasis is on developing number sense and math strategies. The standards are designed to direct students toward problem solving, math thinking, and illustrating their answers.

TECHNOLOGY:

In the classroom, all students will be using their Chromebook for technology. Lessons will be posted on SeeSaw and students will do the lessons independently at school. All students will memorize their student I.D. and Password to use their Chromebooks. In case of remote learning, all students will be sent home with a Chromebook and know how to independently go to SeeSaw and do their lessons.


WRITING:

First grade students write EVERY single day for many purposes. Students will learn the structures of writing using Thinking Maps through Write from the Beginning...and Beyond. Students will develop the skills and craft of writing through Lucy Caulkin's Writer's Workshop. Throughout the year, students will experience creative writing, expository writing, and non-fiction writing through focused modeled lessons and writing workshop opportunities. A few of their pieces will be corrected for spelling and grammar (rough draft, edit, final draft). Inventive spelling at this age is often used. We will teach traditional manuscript handwriting.


SCIENCE:

We will be teaching the following units: Waves, Light, and Sound; Structure, Function, and Information Processing (What scientists do); Space Systems


SOCIAL STUDIES:

Family Traditions, U.S. Traditions; Civics: Notable People, Places and Symbols; Economics: Earning and Personal Goal Setting; A World of Boundaries (Maps)


RESTORATIVE PRACTICES:

An environment and style of discipline that holds our students accountable to high expectations while providing them the support they need to achieve it. Restorative practices are a mindset. A set of beliefs about why people choose positive behavior and the power of relationships. They are rooted in repairing harm and building and repairing relationships. We are developing intrinsic motivation and student empowerment. One way we use restorative practice in First grade is by having positive classroom meetings whereby all children have a voice. Children share their thoughts, feelings, and problem solving ideas with others.
