About Drake NJHS

The members of the Drake National Junior Honor Society are selected from the 8th grade class using criteria based on scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. Students who wish to be members of this organization must show a dedication to community service, leadership in school organizations, and exemplary character. Applicants qualify in 7th grade year by having a specified GPA of 3.665. Drake NJHS members organize a variety of activities in order to raise funds for their various projects which benefit the community. Acceptance into NJHS is based on the specified GPA, a thoughtful essay, and positive three out of four teacher recommendations.

Scholarship: Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.665 (on a 4.0 scale) meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character.

Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the community, done without compensation and with a positive, kind, and energetic spirit. Students must complete 20 hours of community service during their 8th grade year.

Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.

Citizenship: The student who demonstrates citizenship demonstrates participation and responsibility, as a young adult, through involvement in organizations in and out of school. In addition, students exemplify the DRAKE Way at all times when at school.

Character: The student of good character does the right thing , even when no one is looking. They conduct themselves in an ethical fashion, are helpful, honest, kind, respectful, and reliable.
