Unit 1

How do readers make sense of what they read?

Students understand reading involves making sense of what they read and hear.

The focus of this unit is for students to make sense of the text they read by examining basic text structure. Students will use text structure to provide important information when retelling what they read. When reading or listening to literary text students will be able to identify the characters, setting and events (Literary text structure). When reading or listening to informational texts students will work to identify the main topic using key details from the text. Students will also learn classroom procedures for participating in their new classroom community, reading independently, and working with partners.They will continue to develop good reading habits that build stamina, learn skills to solve hard words, and establish working partnerships.
