How do we identify when students need additional support?
In Jeffco, we define a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) as a systemic, continuous improvement framework in which data-based decision-making is practiced across all levels of the educational system in order to increase outcomes for each and every student. This prevention-based framework is the equitable “way of doing business” which utilizes high-quality evidence-based instruction, intervention, and assessment practices to ensure that every student receives what they need in order to be successful.
Social Skills Improvement System™ Social-Emotional Learning Edition Screening/Progress Monitoring Scales (SSIS SEL)
The Normandy Elementary community invests deeply to ensure high levels of learning for all. This includes not only being attentive to academic growth, but also recognizing that the social and emotional growth of students is critically important. Current research indicates a direct connection between students’ emotional well-being and their academic performance. We are dedicated to creating academic and social-emotional support linked directly to the assessed needs of our students. We now have the opportunity to systematically screen the social and emotional skills of all our students. We will be using the Social Skills Improvement System™ Social-Emotional Learning Edition Screening/Progress Monitoring Scales (SSIS SEL). to screen students' social-emotional competencies.
SSIS-SEL Information: The SSIS-SEL Edition Screening/Progress Monitoring Scales is a strength-based tool for screening and progress monitoring social and emotional competence. Three times per year, teachers are asked to score each student in their class in six areas.
They are:
Self-Awareness: A student’s realistic understanding of his/ her strengths and limitations, and consistent desire for self improvement.
Social Awareness: A student’s capacity to interact with others in ways that show respect, tolerance, and cooperation.
Self-Management: A student’s success in controlling his/ her emotions and behaviors, especially in new and challenging situations.
Relationship Skills: A student’s skill at promoting and maintaining positive connections with others.
Responsible Decision Making: A student’s approach to problem-solving, learning from experience, using values to guide behavior and accepting responsibility.
Motivation to Learn: A student’s approach to learning with respect to behaviors demonstrated in the areas of engagement in instructional activities, capacity to stay on task, and level of effort on difficult or complex activities.
How will the data be used? The screener and scoring information for individual students will remain at Normandy and all information will be kept confidential. The information acquired through the screener will guide our development of school-wide, small group, and/or individual social-emotional interventions, along with other data (ie: discipline data, teacher feedback, parent input, etc.). You will be notified if your child is invited to join a small group or individual intervention.
