5th Grade
Independent Reading Expectations
In our effort to encourage independent reading and promote good literary choices for our students, we have developed the following guidelines for the independent reading portion of their grade.
One book from each trimester to be a Newbery Award winner. www.harpercollins.com/blogs/harperkids/newbery-award-winning-books
Students need to get their book approved by their teacher.
Books must not have been previously read by the student.
Graphic Novels will not be counted.

Book Summaries
After students have read their book, they are required to write a short summary on the large index card they keep in their reading file in the accordion.
The following grading scale will be used to determine final grade.
7 books = 4 (Exceeding the standard)
5-6 books = 3 (Meeting the standard)
3-4 books = 2 (Progressing toward the standard)
1-2 books = 1 (Lacking adequate progress)
In addition to these book summaries, your child's independent reading grade will be affected by the number of times he/she reads during class. Students are aware that they must keep their independent reading book with them throughout the day and bring it home for homework every night.
We appreciate your support!
