Summer Reading & Math

Research shows that students experience a "summer slide" in both reading and math if they don't do some work to maintain what they've learned over the summer. Even 30 minutes a few times a week makes a big difference. The activities I recommend are:

Math - Fact Practice - it's important to have quick recall of basic facts (0-12) for the demands of 5th grade math.

Math - Khan Mappers - this helps students maintain their knowledge of 4th grade math concepts, and fill any gaps they may have missed on the end-of-year MAP test. This program is great as it is individualized for each student in connection with their most recent MAP testing.

READ!!! :) independently or together - we're never too old to "share the reading" by reading aloud with a parent or sibling. Check out Mr. Topp's Website for books read aloud.

Write - journaling for trips/experiences, creative story writing, poems, anything!

Wordle - we had fun this year playing online as a class, and it's a great way to stay sharp with spelling/vocab.
