Science
Animals Through Time
In this unit, students develop an understanding of how animals and their environments have changed through time. Fossils provide a window into the animals and habitats of the past. Analyzing the traits of animals that are alive today and comparing them to fossils, provides evidence of how these ancient organisms and environments of the past may have appeared.
Weather and Climate
In this unit, students investigate and make predictions about the weather through careful observation of the clouds and wind. Students also learn to differentiate between weather and climate and use models to reveal global climate patterns.
Forces, Motion, and Magnets
In this unit, students explore the forces all around them. They investigate the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces, the pushes and pulls of bridge structures, and the effects of friction on the motion of objects. Students also explore the power of magnetic forces and investigate firsthand how these forces can be used to help us in our everyday lives.
Social Studies
Mini-Society - Economics
In this unit, students will explore economic concepts through a hands on approach. They will start their own economy by naming their classroom community, designing their own money and starting a business. Each business will send their product to market and they will assess their product by creating a profit and loss statement. Students will then have the opportunity to change up or improve their business and send their product to market again.
Southeastern Colorado History
In this unit, students explore the history of Southeastern Colorado. We will start by learning about the American explorers who first ventured West and discovered the Great Rocky Mountains. Students will learn about the Santa Fe Trail and some of the Americans who traveled the trail as they sought their fortunes in the west. Finally, students will learn about the importance of Sugar Beets in Colorado history.
Northeastern Colorado History
In this unit, students explore the history of Northeastern Colorado. We will start by learning about the Native Americans that lived on the plains of Colorado. We will learn about how Denver became a city, while students build their own cities using what they learn about Denver to make city planning decisions.
