Writing in Kindergarten is all about helping students discover that their unique ideas can be shared with the world. Students learn to express themselves through a mix of interactive writing opportunities, independent drawing, and early writing.
Our Approach to Writing:
The Developmental Continuum: Kindergarteners will see that writing includes pictures, letters, and words. They will learn to generate ideas and put pencil to paper, moving naturally along their writing journey.
Collaborative & Independent Growth: At the beginning of the year, writing is heavily modeled and shared. As classroom routines and expectations are established, students build the independence and self-direction needed to write on their own.
Purposeful Communication: We emphasize the "why" of writing to help students see its real-world value. Students will work toward creating pictures, labels, and sentences that convey a meaningful message—whether responding to a story or sharing a personal idea.
Jefferson County Public Schools utilizes Illustrative Mathematics, a program where students discover math through hands-on experiences. This resource is designed to challenge students, give them time to solve real-world problems (both independently and collaboratively), and allow them to work closely with their teachers.
