Class Discussion:
What is your favorite animal?
What are some animals that may be found at the wetlands?
This is a long list! Various birds, fish, snakes, lizards, frogs, salamanders, deer, coyote, opossum, fox, bobcat, rabbit, turtles, mice, insects, etc.
** No crocodiles, alligators, or bears would live in our wetlands!
What are different ways that animals walk or move?
Animals that live in wetlands may walk on four feet, swim, slither, fly, hop, climb, etc.
What animals may visit the wetlands and walk on two feet?
Humans!

Mammals that live in wetlands may walk on four feet, swim, hop, or climb
What mammal could we find flying in the wetlands? (hint: they like to be active at night)
Bats are flying mammals that we may find our wetland

Birds that live in the wetlands or other aquatic environments will fly and swim!

Birds that live in wetlands or other aquatic environments have adapted over time to be successful in this environment. What are examples of adaptations in aquatic birds?
These adaptations are all inherited traits, or characteristics that are passed from parents to offspring. Acquired traits are characteristics that an organism learns during its lifetime.
Beak shape is one example of an inherited trait in birds. In the short video below, you will see how a Great Blue Heron (which lives in our wetlands!) uses its long beak to 'stab' at fish in the water.

What are some animals that can be found in our wetlands?
This is a long list! Various birds, fish, snakes, lizards, turtles, frogs, salamanders, deer, coyote, opossum, fox, bobcat, rabbit, turtles, mice, insects, etc.
** No crocodiles, alligators, or bears live in our wetlands.
In your own words, define biodiversity.
Biodiversity can be defined as the variety of living things in an environment or habitat
"Bio" = life ; "diversity" = variety or a range of different things
Environments that have a high Biodiversity are considered stronger than environments that have a low Biodiversity. Why might this be?
When an environment is confronted with a change (ex. loss of a certain species, a natural disaster), environments that have a high biodiversity are less likely to be affected in a drastic way since there are more species to handle the change

What are some threats to biodiversity?
Major threats to biodiversity include habitat destruction, introduced/invasive species, overexploitation (too much farming, hunting, etc), climate change, and human overpopulation

Class Discussion: Habitat Loss
Habitat Fragmentation can be very detrimental to biodiversity. Habitat islands can not support a large amount of species, and genetic diversity among species in these islands will decrease.
