Adopt-A-Child Jamaica
OVERVIEW
According to the National Center on Safe Supportive Learning Environments, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is essential to all students’ education across all grade levels. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities through managing emotions to achieve personal and collective goals. Adopting SEL enhances the ability to show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. Educators can create supportive learning environments and coordinate practices that enhance teaching and learning by paying attention to students' socio-emotional developmental needs.
JDTAN has formed a partnership with Oracabessa High School in St. Mary, Jamaica, as part of our first initiative to positively impact the next generation of youth. Our plan is to follow this cohort of students throughout their high school years at OHS, with a vision of creating a broader community impact over time.
We aim to enhance student attendance, classroom engagement, school tone and discipline, and overall achievement by adopting social-emotional learning principles for incoming 7th graders.
Initiative Overview
This initiative focuses on supporting students’ social and emotional development, equipping them with tools to navigate challenges they may face during the school year and beyond.
