Over the past year of creating Through Different Lenses, it has been a long journey of ups and downs, but that was as expected when joining this class. I never always had the idea of creating a podcast where I interviewed African American nurses on their experiences, but that's all a part of the journey! I originally joined this class and wanted to work with a friend on being African American in a predominantly white institution, but things didn’t go as planned and that's ok! I always knew I wanted to have some sort of a project that had something to do with African American people, but I didn't know how. Until someone gave me the idea to make a podcast on African American nurses and their experiences in nursing school and post nursing school. I chose to create a podcast based on being an African American as a nurse because I want to be a nurse after high school and I wanted to understand what I can experience in nursing school and post nursing school. Once I began my project, I started to not hear back from nurses that I was reaching out to, it was very discouraging because my project was based on human interactions and when I didn’t hear back from nurses, it meant my project wasn't going to go anywhere, but I pushed through and kept reaching out to new nurses and doing many follow up emails. Creating Through Different Lenses has shaped me in so many ways. I am more confident when talking to strangers because when you start your community contacts, you reach out to strangers. It is such a scary thing to do but it's part of life. You have to give yourself that push to do something that scares you. I always try to live by the quote, do it scared. Even in my first community contact interaction I was very scared and had a lot of anxiety but everything went fine. Always be confident in yourself because you know what you are talking about and you’ve done your research. My best advice that I would give incoming capstone students is do what you want to do with your project, even when you do hear feedback it doesn't mean you have to take it. Not all feedback is good feedback. This is your project and it's a reflection of you, so if you don't feel connected with it, how will you be able to share it to the world? Furthermore, PLEASE don’t give up when you don't hear back from people you’ve reached out to, be patient with people, people have a lot going on and sometimes people forget, we're all human. Do that follow up by email, text or even phone call. Everyone always needs a reminder. My final note is to dream big when creating this project, there is nothing holding you back, so if you have ideas, shoot for them. The worst feeling is having guilt about not doing something because you held yourself back.
