Hello, my name is Berkeley Goddard McBride, and my project is a podcast about African American experiences in pwis (Predominantly white institutions). My research question that I based my project on is ¨What experiences do people of color have in Pwis? I plan to do 5 episodes based on different topics of day to day people of color have as experiences. Such as interviewing people of color in sports, academics, social life, and even work life in pwi institutions. I plan to have a discussion with 1-3 people during each episode about the topics at hand, to hear multiple different perspectives.
I have had lots of valuable help along the way that have been making it possible to create this podcast. My mentor Sabrina Scott has helped lead me throughout this process, giving me Ideas, and different aspects to add into my project. I have met with three different community members, each helping my project by telling me their stories and experiences with pwi institutions. I met with Michelle Ifeonu, a black female that attends Fayetteville Manlius High School, and she allowed me to hear her stories and experiences which was very helpful, and I hope to have her on a podcast episode. The next community member I met with was Mrs.Semabia, a mother to two biracial children. Mrs. Semabia and I discussed various different topics related to my project, and she gave me some Ideas to better the concept which was very helpful. I hope to have her in an episode of ¨In The Minority¨ as well. The last community contact that has helped me with my project was Mr.Akil, a black male who is a teacher at Ithaca high school. Interviewing him was extremely helpful as he told me some of the experiences he had in a Pwi college, as well as his experiences being a person of color, and a teacher in a Pwi high school.
