This bibliography is meant to work as a record keeper for resources we used during the research phase of our project. I did not find it terribly necessary given the nature of my project, however, it was a required deliverable, so I briefly wrote of some resources that I did utilize. Although I would suggest others doing their own research to find how different opinions illustrate gender and how that may contradict one's own opinions. I believe it is only through considering the views of others for a moment, that can give anyone a true ability to disregard them.
Jones, B. A., Arcelus, J., Bouman, W. P., & Haycraft, E. (2017). Sport and Transgender People: A Systematic Review of the Literature Relating to Sport Participation and Competitive Sport Policies. Sports medicine (Auckland, N.Z.), 47(4), 701–716. https://doi.org/10.1007/s40279-016-0621-y
This article claims that there is a negative impact on trans athletes due to harassment from other players who believe they shouldn’t be allowed to compete. The article continues by supporting that there is no clear advantage shown between trans and cis athletes after 1 year of hormone therapy due to the change in muscle mass as well as changes in the aerobic system and blood/oxygen levels. This article has a lot of information in it due to it being a government study, but it also is cumbersome to read due to that. But the general bits of information from the conclusion and abstract are helpful to find the specific information needed from the article as it summarizes the study nicely. This study supports what I believe, that trans people should be allowed in sports and brings up important points on how trans people aren’t even on neutral playing fields with cis athletes due to constant harassment worsening their mental health.
Book: Threshold Concepts in Women's and Gender Studies
This book details the inner workings of a Gender Studies course as well as detailing the four main points of the course itself: the social construction of gender, privilege and oppression, intersectionality, and feminist praxis. This book has a lot of information in it, as it covers a full course-load of information. Due to that I’ve been looking at various segments of the book and utilizing them accordingly, specifically trying to focus on the social construction of gender. This book wouldn’t be something that would be given to the students of the class at all but it could be a good jumping off point for thought experiments if given to students in excerpts. This book has a lot of interesting information in it that can definitely help me come up with unit topics or ideas to just further look into as well as including helpful sources that will hopefully make deep diving into the topic easier.
Notes from Dr. DiPietro, a professor of Women’s and Gender Studies at Syracuse University.
Dr. DiPietro is a transgender professor at Syracuse University, who teaches Women’s and Gender Studies, a course that details the lives of women and modern feminism, as well as focusing on the intricacies of gender and how it affects us. Dr. DiPietro’s comments are not the only comments from professors I’ve been able to have look over my curriculum outline as of now, but their comments feel like they hold more weight, given their personal experiences in being transgender, and the amount of time they have been an expert in the topic. Some things that Dr. DiPietro mentioned for revision were the shifting of where certain subtopics were taught to make the lesson material flow more seamlessly, as well as asking for or providing expansion on topics that needed it to better understand how it would fit into the curriculum.
QCenter in Downtown Syracuse
The QCenter is a facet of ACR Health, a health organization who educate and provide resources in the medical field. The QCenter specifically focuses on helping queer youth by offering a safe space for queer youth, as well as offering gender affirming clothing, food, pins, flags, and information on gender for the kids as well as their parents. The QCenter has greatly helped me outside of this project just by hosting queer-friendly events and helping to be more educated and proud of my identity. For this project specifically, the fact that they have a building to host events as well as various resources and groups that they could turn me to have been helpful.
