How to leave a Professional Voicemail

A voicemail lets the person listening to the message know why you called and how to contact you. Here is an example of a voicemail you would leave when you are contacting your mentor or supervisor for your first meeting:

“Hello, Phillip. This is Maya, your new YouthWorks intern. I would like to speak with you about coming to my first day of work. You can call me back at 415-555-5555 any time after 4 p.m. Thank you!”

How to write a Professional Email

Email is an important form of communication in the workplace; you must check your email every day. Emails from your coworkets have important information such as timecard due dates, dates of events, and when you can and cannot work. Some coworkers will prefer that you communicate with them over email as well.

As an employee, you must know how to email in a professional manner. For example, if you wanted to email your coworkers to start your first day you may want to write something like this:

Dear Steven,

This is Darrell, your new YouthWorks intern. I am emailing you to schedule my first day of work at your office. Please respond to this email to let me know when would be a good time for us to meet.

Thank you,

Darrell

An email that you would send someone you are more familiar with may look like:

Steven,

I can’t come to work next Monday because I have to take my mom to a doctor’s appointment. Would it be okay if I come in on Tuesday from 9 am to 1 pm instead?

Thanks and let me know,

Darrell

Keep in mind that your email name and picture should also be work appropriate
