What a sweet week at South Jackson!
Friday’s pep rally was a great way to kick off our One School, One Book adventure and reveal this year’s book, The Chocolate Touch!!! Every student received a copy to take home, and we would love for our families to enjoy the book together. Students can read independently, read with a family member, or simply listen as someone reads aloud. The goal is for everyone to enjoy the story and be part of the fun happening across our school.
As we read The Chocolate Touch together, students will participate in schoolwide activities that build vocabulary, comprehension, and excitement about reading. We hope families will join us by reading along at home so students can fully participate in the conversations and activities at school.
We also enjoyed celebrating some of the growth we are already seeing in our Eagles this year. Our Sweet Rewards Cart visited classrooms as we recognized students for their accomplishments in literacy, math, behavior expectations, and attendance.
We have a long weekend ahead, and we hope all of our Eagle families enjoy the extra time together. Next week will be a little shorter, but we are looking forward to another week filled with learning and opportunities for our students to continue growing.

Each week, families will read one chapter together as we share the joy of reading across our entire school community. We’ve included some fun conversation starters and family activities you may choose to enjoy together. There’s no pressure...just have fun!

Eagle SJES Night is almost here! We are excited to celebrate our SJES Eagles at the East Jackson vs. Hephzibah game at Eagle Stadium on Friday, September 18!
Please note that these are NEW procedures for Eagle SJES Night. SJES students participating in the pre-game activities should arrive at the designated track gate at 6:45 p.m. and must be accompanied by a family member. Family members will wait with their students outside the track/field gate until students are called in for the pre-game activities.
To help us follow the high school’s event procedures, family members will not be permitted on the field or track during student activities such as the tunnel run-through. We know this is different from how Eagle SJES Night has worked in the past, and we appreciate everyone’s understanding and cooperation as we follow these updated procedures. Once the pre-game activities are complete, SJES students will exit the field and rejoin their families outside the SAME field gate they entered for activities. All times are approximate and may be adjusted as needed. We can’t wait to see our Eagles there and cheer on East Jackson! Go Eagles!

We are proud to recognize our 2026–27 Teacher of the Year, Ms. Angie Embry, and our 2026–27 Support Person of the Year, Ms. Leslie Willis.
Ms. Embry, our Media Specialist, serves every student at SJ through the library, ensuring that each student has opportunities to develop a love of reading and learning. She provides leadership in technology, literacy, and research, offers a wide range of media center services, and collaborates closely with teachers to support instruction and student learning.
Ms. Willis, a dedicated paraprofessional, works directly with students each day, providing support that helps them engage, learn, and succeed. Her commitment to our students and school community is an invaluable part of the work we do at SJ.
Congratulations to Ms. Embry and Ms. Willis! We are grateful for their dedication, professionalism, and continued commitment to the students and staff of SJ!
Eagle Treat Friday
We’re excited to share that supplemental snacks and ice cream will be available for purchase every Friday! We let our students sample a variety of Friday treats at the start of the school year, and their feedback was clear: they liked them all!
Our regular school meals will continue to focus on providing nutritious choices throughout the week, while Fridays offer students an opportunity to enjoy a little something extra!
For the easiest way to provide money for supplemental purchases, we encourage families to use LINQ Connect. If sending cash, please place it in a clearly labeled envelope or Ziploc bag with your student’s first and last name and homeroom teacher. Exact change is appreciated. Any extra funds will be added directly to the student’s meal account.
We’re looking forward to making Fridays a little sweeter!
In partnership with Southside Church, South Jackson Elementary is proud to offer the Backpack Kids Program! This free, confidential program provides a bag of non-perishable groceries every Friday to ensure our students have nutritious food over the weekend. All families are welcome to participate - no questions asked.

Is your child missing a jacket, water bottle, or lunchbox? Our Lost and Found is full of items waiting to be claimed!
Please encourage your student to stop by and check the Lost and Found for any of their belongings. We have many lonely items waiting for their owners!
To help us return lost items to you quickly, please write your child's first and last name on their jackets, water bottles, and lunchboxes. Labeling items makes it easy to reunite them with your child.
Remember, any unclaimed items will be donated.
Get ready for an exciting year with two of our SJES after-school clubs! Students in grades 3–5 can explore technology and build competition-ready projects in the Eagle Tech Club. Additionally, 4th and 5th graders passionate about writing and design can help create our school newspaper and yearbook with the Great Day Gazette & Yearbook Club. Both clubs meet after school in the Media Arts Lab, and parents must provide transportation home with pick-up at the front of SJES. All Pro Dad: Stronger Together ***Next Meeting***September 24th
All Pro Dad continues to be a valued part of South Jackson Elementary, allowing SJ dads, grandfathers, uncles, and other important guys to come together, connect, and support one another. Led by Mr. Nick Waters, this group provides a welcoming space for fathers to encourage one another and focus on loving and leading their families well. When we come together, we grow stronger together—building stronger families, stronger connections, and a stronger SJ community.
Just a friendly reminder for our Eagle families—there’s no need to line up early for car rider pickup. Our line moves quickly and efficiently, taking only about 20 minutes from start to finish. Car rider dismissal begins at 2:40 and ends at 2:55. Arriving too early can block the school entrance, so we appreciate your help in keeping the process safe and smooth for all.
Safety is our top priority during arrival and dismissal. Help everyone stay on time and out of harm's way by following our trusty Eagle timeline and car rider protocols. Staff will be on hand at the front of the school every day from 7:00-7:35 and 2:35-2:55 to ensure student safety.
South Jackson Named a 2025-26 National Beta School of Merit
South Jackson Elementary has been named one of just 10 schools in the Jackson County School System to earn the distinction of being a 2025-26 National Beta School of Merit.
The National Beta School of Merit award recognizes a school's dedication and commitment to academic excellence. To receive this prestigious honor, a school must include members from all eligible grade levels in its Beta Club. This year, 6,103 schools nationwide were recognized as 2025-26 National Beta Schools of Merit.
The National Beta Club serves students in grades 4-12 and is built on four pillars of success: achievement, character, leadership, and service.
Congratulations to our South Jackson Beta members and sponsors for this outstanding accomplishment. We are proud to celebrate this well-deserved recognition!
WHO CAN GET FREE OR REDUCED-PRICE MEALS?
All children in households receiving benefits from SNAP or TANF are eligible for free meals.
Foster children who are under the legal responsibility of a foster care agency or court are eligible for free meals.
Children participating in their school’s Head Start program are eligible for free meals.
Children who meet the definition of homeless, runaway, or migrant are eligible for free meals.
Children may receive free or reduced-price meals if their household’s income is within the limits of the Federal Income Eligibility Guidelines.
Children receiving Medicaid may be eligible for free or reduced-price meals.
Parents may apply for free and reduced meals at ANY POINT throughout the school year.
To apply for free and reduced meals, parents can log into Linq Connect. Paper applications will also be sent out on the first day of school.

Beginning with the 2026-27 school year, the Jackson County School System will begin utilizing Where’s The Bus, which provides families and students with precise information on when your bus will arrive at your stop, providing up-to-the-minute arrival time and bus location.
All JCSS schools use the Raptor Safe mobile application as part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing school safety, while streamlining visitor management check-in at our schools. The Raptor Safe app builds upon existing visitor procedures, offering a more convenient and secure check-in process for visitors.
What is the Raptor Safe App?
The Raptor Safe app offers a convenient and secure way for visitors to manage and verify their identity before arriving at a school. With the Raptor Passport feature, visitors can pre-verify their identity, allowing for a seamless sign-in process when they arrive on campus.
How Does It Work?
When visiting a school, visitors can use their secure QR code generated by the app to expedite the check-in process. QR codes automatically regenerate every 5 minutes to ensure security and prevent misuse.
