Letter B Lesson: Butterflies – God’s Beautiful Transformation

Age Group: 2-Year-Olds

Lesson Theme: Exploring the letter B through butterflies, God’s amazing creation that shows how He makes us new, just like a caterpillar turns into a beautiful butterfly!

Bible Verse (Simplified): “In Jesus, we are new!” (Based on 2 Corinthians 5:17)

Lesson Objective: Children will recognize the letter B, learn about butterflies as part of God’s world, and feel God’s love through play and praise.

Materials Needed: Construction paper, markers/crayons, glue, tissue paper or stickers, toy butterflies or pictures, music player for songs.

Time: 30-45 minutes

Opening Prayer (2 minutes)

Gather the children in a circle. Hold hands and pray simply:

“Dear God, thank You for butterflies and the letter B. Help us learn and play today. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”

(Wave your arms like butterfly wings to get wiggles out!)

Bible Story Time (5 minutes)

Show pictures of a caterpillar turning into a butterfly. Tell the story:

“Once there was a little caterpillar, munch-munch-munching on leaves (pretend to eat!). God made it sleep in a cozy blanket (wiggle and curl up!). Then… poof! God turned it into a beautiful butterfly with colorful wings (flap arms!). God makes everything new and pretty, just like He makes our hearts new with Jesus!”

Repeat the verse: “In Jesus, we are new!” (Have kids echo you with claps.)

Song Time (5-7 minutes)

Sing these easy songs with actions. Repeat 2-3 times for fun!

1.  B is for Butterfly (Tune: “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”)

B is for Butterfly, flying up so high.
God made you colorful, in the big blue sky.
Flap your wings, flap your wings,
Thank You, God, for pretty things!
B is for Butterfly, flying up so high.
(Action: Flap arms like wings, point to sky, smile big!)

2.  Butterfly Praise Song (Tune: “If You’re Happy and You Know It”

If you’re a butterfly and you know it, flap your wings! (Flap flap!)
If you’re a butterfly and you know it, flap your wings! (Flap flap!)
God made you special, pretty and new,
If you’re a butterfly and you know it, flap your wings! (Flap flap!)
(Variations: “Spin around!” or “Say ‘Thank You, God!’”)

Activity Time (10-15 minutes)

Keep it hands-on and short—toddlers love touching and moving!

1.  Butterfly Craft: “B for Beautiful Wings” (Sensory Craft)

•  Give each child a big letter B cutout from blue paper (or draw it).

•  Let them glue colorful tissue paper “wings” or stickers onto the B to make it a butterfly.

•  Say: “B is for Butterfly! God makes butterflies beautiful, and He makes you beautiful too!”

•  Christian Tie-In: As they glue, whisper, “God is making something new in you today!”

(Clean-up tip: Use washable glue for easy mess.)

2.  Butterfly Hunt Game (Movement Activity)

•  Hide toy butterflies or printed pictures around the room (5-6 total).

•  Play “hunt” music (like the songs above). When it stops, kids find a butterfly and bring it back shouting, “B for Butterfly! Thank You, God!”

•  Christian Tie-In: When all are found, gather and say, “God hides treasures in His world, like butterflies and love!”
(Adapt for group size: Do it as a circle pass if space is small.)

Closing Circle (3 minutes)

Sing a quick “B is for Butterfly” verse. Review: “What letter did we learn? B! What’s our special bug? Butterfly! God makes us new!”

End with a group hug prayer: “Thank You, God, for B and butterflies. Amen!”
