Be Excellent Everyday-B.E.E Behavior Policy and Lack Discipline Policy
First Grade- Mrs. Winey
I believe one of the best ways to prevent behavior problems is to set clearly defined expectations for students across the various settings and circumstances that they will encounter at school. I will spend a great deal of time initially helping the students to understand what these expectations are and why they are important. I will also send home a copy of the expectations for you so that you may help encourage your child. I want to encourage each student to strive for excellence everyday in their behavior and school work. I will refer to this frequently as B.E.E. Behavior to help the children understand. Bees are hard workers who work together for the good of the group.
Your child is very precious and it is my job to help ensure his/her safety as well as that of the other children. I am also charged with ensuring that all children have the opportunity to learn. Therefore, it is very important that all the children understand that their actions affect the other students in the classroom, either positively or negatively. I am sending home a copy of the classroom and the school-wide rules/ expectations so that you can help to reinforce them at home.
Listening skills are part of the focus of our reading curriculum. Therefore, the bee behavior will be used to develop a listening/participation grade for reading class. Because I understand that this is a learned skill, I use a leveled card system to encourage students to modify inappropriate behaviors and positively reinforce desired behaviors. Everyday and throughout the day there is a new beginning with all students returning to green cards when displaying appropriate behaviors or changes in behavior. Depending on the individual choices made students can either move up or down the color code. Students who never receive a yellow, orange, red or black card for the marking period will be placed in the hall of fame.
If additional reminders are needed, a student will receive a sapphire referral to the principal. The referral will be sent home to be signed and returned to the school the next day. As students understand the expectations for behavior at school, less instructional time will be lost. I know that each of you also want to ensure that we do not lose instructional time due to behavior issues and thank you in advance for your support. Please know that I truly have enjoyed meeting your children and look forward to a great year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Winey
