Graham Creek Elementary's STEM initiative places a strong emphasis on STEM exposure early on in our student's education. Building a strong foundation in STEM education regardless of grade level has been accomplished through the implementation of various STEM curricula and PBL opportunities. Through consistent coaching and modeling, our teachers have gained the confidence and ability to encourage our students to think critically, be independent, and create a variety of ways to demonstrate their own understanding of concepts and topics.
Jennings County Schools has used an IDOE STEM Acceleration grant to purchase multiple vetted programs at Graham Creek Elementary. Engineering is Elementary, Code.org, PBL, and Picture Perfect STEM are all used in classrooms to ensure quality STEM instruction that has been approved by the IDOE and aligns with the Indiana Academic Standards, is being received by our students.
Integrated Stem Curriculum has been planned out across grade levels to ensure continuity among grade levels and appropriate transitions from one grade level to the next. STEM units and lessons are taught throughout core subjects. Depending on the skills being fostered, grade levels will team up to allow older and younger students the opportunity to solve real-world problems in a cross grade level group setting and even combined grade levels.
Computer Science is part of our regular routine at Graham Creek Elementary. Due to GCE's focus on equity and access for all students, each student in grades K-6 has received either an IPad or Chromebook. 100% of our students are enrolled in code.org as well as Type to Learn to ensure Computer Science and typing skills are learned per the IDOE state standards requirements.
100% of our students at Graham Creek Elementary receive integrated instruction on the IDOE's Employability Skills. Our guidance counselor and Behavior Support Specialist work collaboratively with classroom teachers to focus on specific career related skills. We offer whole group instruction, but also provide small groups and one on one services to those students who require additional services.
Gone are the days of student exclusion in the classroom. STEM education is offered to all students regardless of ability. Instructional support is offered to those through push-in assistance from our special education teachers, Title I staff, and even our high-ability staff. Differentiation is based on an individual's IEP or ILP. Access and opportunity for all learners are crucial in the development and understanding of the STEM curriculum and other topics and skills needed in and out of the classroom.
All teachers at GCE use a variety of assessment methods to allow students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of STEM learning and instructional effectiveness. Some examples of assessments include ILEARN scores, individual rubrics, group rubrics, STEM products, and in class surveys,
