I am CAMT (Certified Advanced Myofascial Technique) level one certified. This training is a technique that blends different massage modalities to bring awareness to the body. CAMT can help people feel better in their bodies. The work is gentle and can be done with clothes on which allows for more movement options. CAMT course also teaches inter-oral massage as well which can treat temporomandibular joint dysfunction.
The work I have pursued has led me toward more of a medical treatment practice. Since I became a certified massage therapist in 2005, I have spent my career working in settings such as traditional massage clinics, a chiropractic office, sports massage sites, and a doctor’s office. I have studied with a wide variety of teachers from all over the world. I am currently getting certified in CAMT(Certified Advanced Myofascial Technique).
I have always wanted to help people throughout my life, so I explored several different paths that eventually led me to massage. My first path was to be a cook in a restaurant, which was nice because now I can cook really good food for my friends and family. My second path was to train in nursing, so I became a personal caregiver for a good number of years. My current path took me to massage school at Ashmead School of Massage (Tigard, Oregon campus) in 2004, where I graduated in 2005.
In my schooling I had the opportunity to complete an internship with the Cancer Institute of Portland; only a handful of students are chosen for this each year. I wanted to do this because my dad passed away at an early age from cancer. I applied to honor him and to give back to people working with cancer patients. We provided light massages to patients as they received chemotherapy and on the other days when the patients received radiation we would massage the nurses. The nurses would often fall asleep during their massages. We also learned polarity therapy during our training and relaxing foot work.
My education has taken me to Spain multiple times, where I studied movement and bodywork classes while walking on the French Camino de Santiago in the company of other bodywork professionals. Here I learned proprioception work and self-care techniques from Rolfers, a Feldenkrais practitioner and a physical therapist.
Some of my favorite activities are walking, bicycling, hiking and being out in the water. I also like to make art when I feel inspired. The mediums I use are wood burning, colored pencils and oil crayons.
Doing massage is never learned, it is always learning.
