Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is AVID Elective only for first-generation college students?

A: While AVID originally began with a focus on first-generation college students, it has expanded since then to focus on ANY student who would benefit from the support the class gives to help prepare them for college and career success.

Q: If I apply and am not accepted into the AVID Elective Class, will I still receive support to help me be successful both during and after high school?

A: Yes! We have a great staff here at Craig that will work to help you be successful, regardless of whether you are in the AVID Elective Class or not. Our school counselors are great resources for helping you learn about what opportunities exist both in high school and beyond.

Q: If I don't think I want to do the AVID Elective Class my freshman year, can I apply later?

A: We know that you have a lot of choices when it comes to selecting classes. While it is possible to apply for and be accepted into the AVID Elective Class after your freshman year, we cannot guarantee that we will have a seat in the class for you. Our suggestion: if you are on the fence about being in the AVID Elective Class your freshman year, there is no harm in completing the application. If we have more students apply than we can enroll, we will interview all applicants to find the best fit for our AVID Elective Class.

Q: What happens in the AVID Elective class?

A: Students receive academic instruction in writing, note-taking, studying, test-taking, and organizing. They also receive academic support using collaborative tutorial groups and peer counseling. Students are motivated to pursue academic excellence through goal setting, rigorous classes, college field trips, classroom guest speakers, and AVID team building!
