An Oral History Project by the 4th Graders at Rosa Parks Elementary School

Jasmyn, a fourth-grader in Ms. Atwater's class, sat down and interviewed her grandmother, Ms. Sallie Mae, about growing up in Durham in the 1960s. Born in 1955, her grandmother remembers participating in the civil rights movement and being in the first high school class to attend Jordan High after the school district was desegregated. Chase, a fourth-grader in Mr. Vaughan's class, spoke with his father, Brandon, an Army veteran who was stationed in Afghanistan when Chase was a baby. He tells him about the friends he made and the dangers he experienced and how memories of home kept him going during some hard times. Click here for more!


Shania M.

Shania, a fourth-grader in Ms. Farrington's class, discovered many things she didn't know about her aunt Lola when she interviewed her at her home in South Durham, where she has lived all her life. They discuss growing up in a noisy family, hanging out with her many cousins, and falling in love with her husband, Roberto, who drove her around town on his fancy, red motorcycle. Marco T.

Marco, a fourth-grader in Mr. Williams's class, was surprised when his step-mother, Natalia, told him how she met his dad, Marco, Sr., for the first time at a jazz concert. Marco's dad introduced himself to Natalia after she played his favorite song on her saxophone. She fell in love with him because he was handsome and made her laugh. Natalia tells Marco about her love of music and cooking and her job as a music teacher at Parks Elementary School. Click here for more!

Jordan D.

Jordan is a fourth-grader in Ms. Atwater's class who talked with her neighbor, Ms. Lily, about how life on her street has changed over the years. Ms. Lily moved into her apartment when she got married 40 years ago. She remembers when only Black people lived on the street because the city was segregated. Her kids went to segregated schools and Black people owned all the businesses in her part of town. Ms. Lily tells her how she experienced racism and how her mom told her to love herself no matter what other people say. Click here for more!
