Welcome to The Hub!

Welcome to The Hub. The technology lab has been named "The Hub' for many reasons. According to Google and Oxford language, the definition of a hub is "the central part of a wheel, rotating on or with the axle, and from which the spokes radiate." or "the effective center of an activity, region, or network." In summary, it's the center of a system.  In Isle of Wight County, Smithfield Middle School is that center for technology education. It is the place where all of our feeding elementary schools come together into one central hub for the first time. It is the  hub where the various STEM and coding courses come together into a central program that will feed into the high school programs. It is also the place where students emerge from teacher dependent elementary programs to the independent learners they will need to be in high school. Middle school is hub between childhood and being a teenager and is a good metaphor for our technology program. We are the central hub of merging separate STEM programs into skills that can be applied in a career setting. We are not only trying to ignite their imagination for learning but setting them up for a career path that they can begin pursuing in high school. As Mrs. Street likes to say, "Let's get Hubbing"!

Remind

We will be using Remind to communicate this year. Please connect to your students class as I will be posting this newsletter there exclusively in a few weeks. Please only sign up for the class your student is in for this semester to eliminate confusion and unnecessary email traffic. If you are unsure which class your student is in, please ask them before joining.

This year, our technology program offers 3 courses.

Students will apply the design process to solve problems and understand the influence of creativity and innovation in the move industry. Students will work in teams to explore how various forms of technology can be used in real world applications. Oral presentations will give the students opportunities to present their data, analyses, and conclusions.

Students will be using design processes to explore and design elements of design in various elements of visual and audio productions. They will showcase their skills on the school website, assemblies and media outlets

Students will be exploring how designing specific systems can solve our everyday problems. From toasters to Mars Rovers, efficient systems impact the flow of society on a daily basis. The class is taught in 4 sections.
