History
Our History curriculum is carefully sequenced so that our children’s historical knowledge, understanding and skills build over time. We follow a chronological narrative of British History so that children can build upon their prior knowledge as their understanding of the time periods and events that shaped our history are revealed. As well as British History children also learn about the achievements and legacies of the wider world as well as looking closely at the history of our local area. We follow a scheme that was selected for the ability to be adapted to our children's needs and interests as well as allowing for the diversity of our schools voices to be heard and represented.
The children's lessons follow rich and ambitious lines of enquiry. Children are given the opportunity to develop answers to questions such as: What makes people go on a journey? Did the Great Fire make London a better or worse Place? We teach children the knowledge they need in small steps to answer these challenging questions successfully. Studying history in this way inspires children’s curiosity, encourages them to ask critical questions and enables them to have a better understanding of the society in which they live and that of the wider world. In our history curriculum, we have thought about key threads that run through the units of learning. These include invasion and settlement, legacy, empire, technological advancement and society. Having these threads that run throughout the units of learning the children are able to make links with their prior learning and gain historical perspectives by placing their historical knowledge into different contexts.
